Abdominal, Small parts and Gynaecology Ultrasound
Are you looking to develop your career and expand your knowledge ? Then this is the post for you! The Ultrasound department provides a wide ranging service including, abdominal, small parts and gynaecological scans. In addition there will be a fantastic opportunity to broaden your skills and knowledge with HyCoSy, CEUS, FNA’s, MSK and Vascular ultrasound. A wide range of examinations are performed by Sonographers including In Patients, AE, OP and GPs.
We have a Link Grade competency system in place so for Sonographers with 2 years post graduate experience and any specialist training in the above can apply for an upgrade to 8a. Graduates without any specialist training will be employed initially at band 7 level and then will be supported to achieve relevant competencies for 8a
Main duties of the job
The post holder will
- Assess and perform own specialist casework in area of specialism e.g. Musculoskeletal or Interventional e.g. HyCoSy, CEUS, FNA or Breast ultrasound etc.
- Responsible for regular QA (every 3months) of at least one ultrasound scanner.
- Provide training to other staff in own specialism.
- Lead in clinical audit and undertake research in area of specialism.
- Perform and report in general medical, gynaecology, small parts and vascular ultrasound to provide a high quality patient focussed service.
- Continue to develop ones’ own knowledge, practice and development through continued professional development
- Regular attendance at discrepancy meetings and MDT’s.
- Discrepancies /interesting cases submitted to Consultant Sonographer on a weekly basis.
- Submit and present pathological case studies to sonographers on educational half days.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To demonstrate a high standard of ultrasound skills and interpretation of diagnostic ultrasound information in line with the departmental evidence based protocols.
- Implement and participate in QA of all Imaging Ultrasound scanners.
- To prioritise the departmental workload on a day to day basis
- Be responsible for time management and prioritising your own workload.
- Act as supervisor / mentor to sonographers & student sonographers.
- Communicate incidents/complaints to the Superintendent Sonographer and participate in the investigations of complaints.
- Assist in developing and maintaining evidence-based quality standards that are regularly audited, and initiate appropriate changes in practice.
- Active involvement in service development, improvement and redesign.
- Develop and maintain effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective patient management.
Person specificationQualificationsEssential criteria
- • BSc Diagnostic Radiography (or equivalent)
- • PG Diploma in ultrasound (or equivalent) and vascular qualification or demonstrable experiential vascular skills
- • Postgraduate qualification / experiential learning in specialist area.
- • Evidence of CPD
- • Current Membership to Professional Bodies HCPC, BMUS and SOR (or equivalent).
- • MSc in Ultrasound or experiential learning2
ExperienceEssential criteria
- • Provide specialised advice to sonographers and student sonographers
- • Broad experience in ultrasound scanning in Abdominal, gynaecology, small parts, Neck, and Vascular.
- • Experience at writing reports
- • Experience in counselling, breaking bad news and referral of patients to tertiary centres
- • Familiar with radiology IT systems
- • General administrative duties within an ultrasound environment
- • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in all aspects of ultrasound
- • Experience in your specialism of 1 to 2 years (to include the training period)
Desirable criteria
- Experience in small parts, hernia and lumps & bumps scanning.
