Senior Legal Counsel, Regulatory and Product

  • Full-time
  • Cost Center Hierarchy: Legal

Our mission is to enable businesses and their communities to thrive in the digital economy. We’re the strategic payments partner for some of the best known fast-moving brands globally such as Wise, Hut Group, Sony Electronics, Homebase, Henkel, Klarna and many others. Purpose-built with performance and scalability in mind, our flexible cloud-based payments platform helps global enterprises launch new products and create experiences customers love.

Checkout.com is seeking a talented and dynamic Senior Legal Counsel with a strong regulatory and payments background to join our Legal team. The Senior Legal Counsel will be expected to advise on payments and financial services regulations and assist with interaction with global regulators when required, with a particular focus on Europe and the Middle East. You will need to take a consultative and collaborative approach to solving complex legal, regulatory and business issues. You will need to be a seasoned legal professional with deep expertise in financial services, payment systems, and regulatory frameworks.

As you will be collaborating with all core functions within the company, the successful candidate will be able to handle multiple areas of responsibilities autonomously, demonstrating excellent critical judgment with a hands-on approach. This is a great opportunity to work with our expanding legal team on a broad range of projects across multiple jurisdictions, learn new areas of law and play a key role in supporting the company’s rapid growth. You will report into our Regulatory and Product Associate General Counsel in London.

Role Responsibilities

  1. Advise on payments regulatory matters including compliance with payments laws in Europe and the Middle East and other payments laws and related regulations across our different geographies, with the support of external counsel where necessary.
  2. Partner with our commercial, product, risk, treasury, and compliance teams, acting as a real-time legal advisor to understand their needs and help find creative solutions to achieve business objectives.
  3. Provide legal support for the development, launch, management and expansion of innovative payment products and services.
  4. Advise on the legal and regulatory implications of product features, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, including PSD2, AML and other financial regulations.
  5. Advise key business functions on new regulatory developments impacting the payments industry, and advise on their potential impact on the company’s operations, products and contractual commitments.
  6. Support relationships with regulators on license-related matters, with a focus on Europe and the Middle East.
  7. Provide legal input into the development and implementation of internal policies, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  8. Help the business continue to expand internationally, researching and evaluating new territories and applying for new licenses or expanding existing licenses.
  9. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior legal team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performance environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • UK or EU-qualified lawyer in good standing with 8+ years of relevant post-qualification experience either in-house or in private practice, with a focus on financial services, payment systems, or technology sectors.
  • Direct experience or a very strong theoretical understanding of legal principles applicable to payments, including with respect to the payments ecosystem, regulatory and licensing strategy and execution, licensing issues and consumer protection laws.
  • Strong preference for previous experience supporting licensed payment entities in the Middle East, in particular the UAE.
  • Previous experience at or advising a global fintech or a bank, the payments organization of a large marketplace/platform company, and/or achieving similar strategic outcomes for a payments organization at scale.
  • Willingness to be flexible with the scope and variety of projects to be undertaken in this role.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast-paced culture.
  • A practical, solutions-oriented focus to solving legal challenges.
  • Proactive and capable of working with minimal direction and independently driving projects to completion.
  • Excellent judgment and project leadership skills, able to handle and deliver on numerous high-priority projects concurrently.
  • Someone who does not settle for the status quo, but is always thinking about innovative ways of doing things.
