Job Description:

I am currently working with a global multi-disciplinary Local Authority focused team to recruit a Principal Highways Engineer with a strong technical background in their Newcastle office. You will be joining a team of very experienced engineers and be involved in urban redevelopment, active travel, safety schemes, and more across Newcastle and the rest of the North East. Whether you’ve got a strong technical background in Highways Design, Drainage Design, or Traffic Design, this is a role that you can continue to showcase your expertise and offer your experience to the junior members of the team while being able to explore and learn new disciplines.

Principal Highways Engineer Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing technical aspects of larger projects or components of major projects, meeting financial, quality, and timeframe objectives and meeting or exceeding client expectations.
  • Undertake a Project Management/Design Management Role in line with each project’s needs.
  • Manage the delivery of elements of larger projects in accordance with Management Systems to meet time, quality, budgetary, and health and safety targets.
  • Work to ensure maximum client satisfaction, championing client care and proactively working with the client.

Principal Highway Engineer Key Accountabilities

  • Work collaboratively with other design disciplines.
  • Oversee an agreed scope of work and the operational workload of a project team including sub-contractors, ensuring work is allocated appropriately and resources are fully utilized.
  • Manage the performance of team members and sub-contractors, identifying and ensuring the resolution of any issues.
  • Provide technical expertise to team members, to support them in their delivery on the project and in their professional development.
  • Ensure that effective financial and project management controls are in place and deployed to enable monitoring, modification, and forecasting as appropriate.
  • Provide specialized technical input to studies and design on Local Authority Projects.
  • Provide technical leadership at a project level.
  • Approve and sign off on work.

Principal Highways Engineer Key Qualifications

  • Have a BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Achieved Chartered or Incorporated Engineer professional status with the ICE, CIHT, or equivalent.
