Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a highly visible senior midwife and as such expected to provide specialist knowledge, advice and clinical expertise.

As Matron you will be a highly visible member of the service’s team, supported by the Heads and Director of Midwifery. The Matron is an influential role and recognised as being a key component to the delivery of the Maternity strategy. The Matron will work closely within a team of matrons. The matron should be someone who treats all colleagues with equal respect, and is inclusive and democratic. The Matron role also requires the skills and experience to manage staff ensuring the continuous delivery of efficient and effective services.

Working collaboratively with other Matrons the post holder will contribute to the development and delivery of both Trust and Divisional objectives and assisting in the delivery of the governance agenda.

To be responsible for setting and monitoring clinical standards and to play a proactive role in quality improvement, whilst demonstrating an awareness of the impact of each clinical area’s activity, interacting with other areas to provide a seamless service.

Maternity Services

Maternity Services at King’s has a strong reputation for women-centred care. Key strengths in the service are involving women in decisions about their care and supporting informed choice throughout pregnancy and in the postnatal period, overseeing and implementing a range of models of midwifery care which enable high quality care provision to women and families from vulnerable groups and the provision of a seamless service between the hospital and community.

As a member of the leadership team, you will be responsible for advancing change in four main areas of impact – quality, patient experience, finance and efficiency, and leadership and skills development.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

  1. Work collaboratively with all stakeholders in the maternity services to deliver the Maternity strategy.
  2. Act as a positive role model providing expert clinical advice and support promoting a woman and family centre approach to maternity care.
  3. Have excellent and broad ranging communication skills.
  4. Manage and respond to complaints and feedback from people who use the service.
  5. Oversee budgets and ensure appropriate provision and care for the management of resources for midwifery and support staff, consumables and environment.
  6. Oversee and contribute to patient safety management working closely with the governance teams and using the Trust approach to PSIRF.
  7. Create and sustain efficient care processes that provide high quality clinical care.
  8. Have the skills to assess and monitor care provided.
  9. Have the knowledge and ability to be able to report this in a way which provides assurance to the multi-disciplinary senior leadership team.
  10. Actively engage with improvement in the service using recognised quality improvement methods.
  11. Be efficient to monitor and enact HR processes such as sickness absence management, disciplinary procedures, recruitment and retention of staff including succession planning.
  12. Create a supportive environment in which training, coaching and practice development needs are accurately identified and progressed through agreed structures, appraisals, PDPs and performance management.

The Matron for Harris Birthright Unit and Specialist Maternity Services takes responsibility for the following areas of maternity services:

  1. Maternity Assessment Unit
  2. Midwife Sonography
  3. Antenatal Screening
  4. NIPE (operational lead)
  5. Bereavement midwives
  6. Maternity Vaccinations
  7. Line management of Fetal Medicine unit midwives

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of post registration education at degree level.
  • Experience of managing a large clinical team including human resources management.
  • Experience of working in partnership with multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing change within a clinical environment.

Desirable

  • Relevant management or leadership course.
