Job overview

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust are currently recruiting for a 10 months fix -term Domestic Assistant based at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

The post will be working 20 hrs per week

Monday to Friday 17.00 – 21.00

This vacancy is open to all internal and external candidates. NHS Employees should ideally secure their manager’s agreement for a secondment arrangement ideally prior to applying, as this will be a condition of any offer made. This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term basis, it has been established to provide cover for an employee on maternity leave and will end on 8th August 2025 or when the substantive postholder returns. Whilst this post is advertised on a fixed term / secondment basis there is the potential that this post may become permanent in the future.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for carrying out specific cleaning and other related duties, following set procedure and standards to provide and maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the hospital and designated wards or departments.

To perform domestic duties including:

  • General cleaning.
  • Isolation cleaning.
  • High and low dusting.
  • Wet and dry mopping.
  • Clean toilets, baths and washbasins.
  • Emptying clinical and general waste bins and placing bags in designated areas
  • Vacuum Cleaning.
  • Scrubbing and buffing floors with mechanical machine.
  • Carpet shampooing.
  • Using chemicals and cleaning equipment responsibly and within health and safety guidelines.
  • Maintaining staff and public safety through appropriate use of warning signage whilst cleaning.

Full training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering high standards of cleaning within both the clinical and non-clinical areas.
  • To clean specific areas in line with Trust policy and national cleaning standards.
  • To provide a cleaning service in accordance with approved methods, standards and frequencies.
  • To provide support to terminal cleans/infection cleans ensuring conversance with infection control & procedures in respect of all cleaning duties.
  • The removal and cleaning up of uncontained body fluid spillages in line with Trust policy and national cleaning standards.
  • To use cleaning equipment, machinery and cleaning materials once trained and ability to spot defects with machinery and report to Supervisor.
  • Where required undertake Bioquell Q50- HPV decontamination duties and be fully compliant with all the methods and responsibilities of using this system.
  • To adopt a flexible approach when undertaking domestic duties.

Person specification

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Understanding importance of cleaning within a Hospital environment
  • Knowledge of using electrical cleaning equipment (vacuum, steam cleaner, buffer, floor scrubber -dryer, carpet cleaner)

Desirable criteria

  • Understanding of Infection Control precautions (hand washing, colour coding, PPE, hygiene)
  • Understanding of safe usage of chemicals (COSHH) and Health & Safety

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Basic Numeracy & Literacy required
  • Knowledge / understanding of cleaning and domestic assistant role
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of people and understand written and verbal communications
  • Ability to organise & prioritise day to day tasks
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to meet service needs, i.e. move area, work Bank Holidays

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to use cleaning equipment, pull out beds to facilitate cleaning; handling refuse sacks; able to stand for long period of time
  • Basic IT skills to enable complete of Trust e-learning and use software to book annual leave

Experience

Essential criteria

  • No previous experience required

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of cleaning within healthcare environment
  • Experience of working with public/customers

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • No formal qualifications are required: an induction period, on the job instruction and additional training will be provided on infection control, COSHH, national cleaning standards, use of cleaning equipment/machinery and manual handling.

Desirable criteria

  • NVQ Level 1 & 2 or other recognised cleaning qualifications
